Diario di Gioco 179 - Cosmic Encounter

Quanto mi piacciono i Classici?

How much I like the Classics? Well usually not much, but when it happened the other day to be able to play Cosmic Encounter, '77 edition ... Well it was really nice!

For those not familiar (Shame!) Cosmic Encounter is a game where each player is an alien race who ventures out to conquer the galaxy, colliding course with other alien races. The game, in its most basic possible, it is disarmingly simple.

---------------------------------------------------

Each player has a star system consisting of five starting planets. On each of planets there are four tokens of the player. The player has a hand of cards consisting of Challenge cards (Attack and Compromise) and Edicts cards. The active player draws a color from a stack, the color is the star system where to attack.

Chosen the Planet to attack, the attacker places his units (tokens) and asks if any alliances. After that the defendant asks the alliance in turn. At this point, the players put a card face down, and the reveal together. If both cards are of attack, then adding up the number of tokens in the planet, and who makes the most wins. If one of the two is a compromise then who has played the attack wins, if both are compromise then the players have one minute to find an agreement. The player who loses his token sees end up in the warp, dark space from which they can be taken back gradually.

--------------------------------------------------

On this terribly simple system, engage the alien powers, true heart of the game. Each alien power has a special ability, and the variety of these effects in play are the real fun. For example, in the game that we did I had the power to read minds, so I could see the cards of my opponents. My opponents had the powers of the amoebae (could freely move their tokens before challenges) and the Void (when he wins a fight removes the tokens from the game). In the end I won thanks to the fact I always know when I ought to win or lose, even if in fact the others have always had the opportunity to seize victory.

The new edition of the Fantasy Flight, which I talked about here, is far more luxurious, it sure does look strange to think that a game of '77 is still so beautiful, but probably this is what defines genius.
