[Recensione] Martinique

Dura trenta minuti! Ci sono i pirati! E' in offerta a 10€!".

Here we are with an article in rapid succession :)
Today I want to talk about Martinique. I have got this game at the last Modena Play (we are speaking of a couple mounths ago) by accident actually since I was at the convention as lead photographer for our friends from Gioconomicon, so we can say I wasn't there for pleasure (at least not only). So when I comed at the convention I said to myself that I would not, for god's sake, ever bought any game because of my bookshelf's "cracking" under the weight of my discrete collection. Yeah... sure... The day after I was already like "Oh, God! I can't be here and don't buy anything!".  Just happens S. was there with me (a friend of my) saying "Pamput! You should totally buy this one! It's for two! 30'! Pirates! It's for only 10€!". No speaking about that the first two statements (two players and 30') would be suffice to convince me but when I started thinking about the rest... well... this game was litterally teleported on my shelf in no time.

Let's say I have a big passion for short two players games because I actually have a lot of small slots of time in which I can play those games with my girlfriend. This game is really easy to explain and it's also short. The setting is also pretty original: each player has a 4 pirates team on mission on Martinique island to find a big trasure hidden on it. The game is splitted in two faces: sunrise and sunset, in the first one the pirets are lurking for clues about the big trasure (and meanwhile they are collecting "souvenires"); in the second face the big search for the ultimate trasure starts (but only after a good rum at the Hook Bar)!

The game board si made of an 8x8 grid (like in chess) and on every square of the grid there is a "souvenir" (that gives to the player victory points) or a clue made of tiles randomply placed at the game setup. The brilliant part of this game if you ask me is the "clue mechanism". There are 16 clue tiles in the game that may have a letter or a number on it (1-8 or A-H). At the setup a letter clue tile and a number one are left of the game. Those tiles are the coordinates of the big treasure. When a player collects a clue tile from the board she takes it secret to the other player and get to the position of the big treasure by excluson (there are not two clue same tiles in the game so if I collect an A the big treasure for sure is not on the A coordinate). At the and of the game, the trasure coordinates are revealed and the player that actually guessed the right treasure point wins a lot of victory points.

Personalmente trovo i 20 punti eccessivi.

The game is pretty easy and enjoyable. It's short enought to be played twice in an evening also thanks to the always random position of the big trasure. But in my opinion this game has also a very BIG HAIRY BLACK SPOT: the condition that gives victory points in my opinion are really messed up. In the original game the player that finds the big trasure automaticly wins making the all souvenire mechanics useless (making this mechanics only usefull in case of a tide because unless the players are retarded the tresure place are every time clear at the end of the game at least to one of the players). In my opinion this rule settings was introduced by the editors. In my opinion the authors thought the game to be played with those that are intended as "variation rules". In those rules the big trasure gives only points to those who find it, 20 to be precise. By my play experience this is a very good alternative but only if you reduce the points given by finding the big trasure to 10. With this condition I have found the rules to be well balanced.

In the end I think it's a good game that I suggest you to buy if you could find it at a convenient price. :)
Said so, Good Play!
